Frequently asked
Which polisher models is this speed controller compatible with?
This controller is designed specifically for the ShineMate EX620 random orbital polisher. It is also compatible with KOVAX-branded EX620 units, as both share the same electronics platform. It is not cross-compatible with other ShineMate models such as the EX605 or EX830.
Is this a genuine ShineMate part or an aftermarket replacement?
This is the original OEM electronic speed controller sourced directly from ShineMate. It is not a third-party or generic substitute, so you can expect the same performance and fit as the unit that came with your machine when new.
How do I know if my speed controller needs replacing?
Common signs of a failing controller include the polisher surging or hunting at low speed settings, the dial no longer responding linearly (speed jumps rather than ramping smoothly), or the machine cutting out under load even when the backing plate and pad are in good condition. If the motor and bearings check out fine, the controller is usually the culprit.
Can I fit this myself or does it need a technician?
A confident DIY mechanic comfortable with basic electronics work - opening the housing, disconnecting the old unit, and reconnecting the new one - can usually handle the swap. If you are unsure about working inside power tools, rather have it fitted by a qualified service technician to avoid voiding any remaining warranty on the machine body.
Will replacing the controller affect my polisher's warranty?
Using a genuine OEM replacement part should not affect the machine's warranty, but you should always confirm with your point of purchase. Using a non-genuine aftermarket part typically does void the manufacturer's warranty on the machine.
Does this part affect the orbital throw or backing plate compatibility?
No. The electronic speed controller governs RPM and speed ramping only. It has no effect on the machine's orbital throw (15 mm on the EX620) or backing plate fitment. Pad and backing plate compatibility remains unchanged after replacement.
Can a faulty speed controller damage pads or paint?
A controller that causes speed surging can make it harder to maintain consistent pressure and machine speed, which increases the risk of uneven correction or, in severe cases, burning through thin paint on edges. Replacing a faulty controller is a straightforward way to keep your correction work predictable and safe.
Is this the same part used in the KOVAX Hexone polisher?
The KOVAX Hexone uses a different platform and a different electronics unit. This controller is specific to the EX620 body. If you are unsure which unit your polisher uses, check the model number printed on the machine's nameplate before ordering.
