What does a foam interface pad actually do?
It sits between your rigid backing plate and the sanding disc. The foam layer absorbs the backing plate's flat geometry and lets the disc flex so pressure is distributed evenly across curved and contoured surfaces. Without it, the edges of a rigid plate tend to dig in and leave marks on anything that isn't perfectly flat.
Which thickness should I choose - 7mm or 12mm?
The 7mm pad (990.013) is suited to general contour work where the panel has mild curves or subtle body lines. The 12mm pad (990.014) gives more cushioning for aggressively curved surfaces and deeper profiles. If you're working across a variety of panels, the 7mm is the more versatile starting point; move to 12mm when you need more flex.
What backing plate do these pads fit?
Both pads are designed specifically for 75mm (3") RUPES backing plates. They are sized and centred for that diameter, so pairing them with a different plate size is not recommended.
Can I use these for wet sanding as well as dry sanding?
Yes. The pads are compatible with both wet and dry sanding applications, so you can use them with water or a lubricant for wet sanding, or run them dry depending on your process and the sanding disc you're pairing them with.
Do these work with any brand of sanding disc?
The interface pads are designed to work with RUPES sanding discs on a RUPES 75mm backing plate. While many 75mm sanding discs use standard hook-and-loop attachment, best results and backing plate compatibility are assured when used within the RUPES system.
Will the interface pad slow down my sanding or reduce cut?
It does soften the overall pressure delivery slightly by design, which is exactly the point on curved surfaces - you want consistent, controlled contact rather than maximum aggression. On flat surfaces a rigid backing plate without an interface pad will always cut faster. These pads are a contouring tool, not a replacement for direct backing plate use on flat panels.
How do I clean and maintain the interface pads?
Rinse residual abrasive and swarf from the foam after each use and allow to air dry before storage. Avoid compressing or stacking the pads under heavy objects, as permanent deformation of the foam affects how evenly they distribute pressure during sanding.
How many pads come in the set?
Each set contains two interface pads of the same thickness. You choose either the 7mm set or the 12mm set when you select the variant.
