True Decon Prep

Strip bonded contamination before it kills your correction

Polishing over bonded fallout and tar deposits blunts your pads and grinds contamination into the clear coat. The Soft99 Surface Smoother pulls that contamination off first, giving you a genuinely clean substrate so your polish cuts consistently and your coating bonds properly.

Why It Works

Clean paint is the foundation of everything

Four reasons the Surface Smoother belongs in your decon routine.

  • Dark-Paint Formula

Developed specifically for dark and metallic clear coats where micro-marring from claying shows up most.

  • Glass-Smooth Result

Removes bonded fallout, tar and sap that washing leaves behind, restoring a truly smooth paint surface.

  • Better Coating Bond

Waxes, sealants and ceramic coatings bond more evenly and last longer on a contamination-free surface.

  • Economical 150g Bar

Fold to a clean face after each panel and one bar handles multiple full decon sessions.

How It Compares

Soft99 Surface Smoother vs. a generic clay bar

Not all clay bars are the same grade or formulation. Here is how the Soft99 Dark & Metallic stacks up against a generic, one-size-fits-all clay bar.

Feature DetailerSA Alternative
Formulated for dark and metallic paint Yes No
Removes bonded fallout and tar Yes Yes
Tuned to minimise micro-marring on dark clear coats Yes No
Enhances metallic flake clarity Yes No
Soft, pliable clay easy to fold and reshape Yes Yes
Safe on standard paint colours Yes Yes

Made for Dark Paint

The formulation dark and metallic paint actually needs

Generic clay bars can leave micro-marring that shows up harshly on black, dark blue and deep metallic finishes. Soft99 tuned the Dark & Metallic formula to be gentler on these coatings while still lifting stubborn contamination cleanly, so you get a smooth, clear base without adding more correction work.

Questions

Frequently asked

What contaminants does this clay bar remove?

It removes bonded contaminants that regular washing leaves behind - iron fallout, industrial fallout, tar deposits, tree sap, bug splatter and bird droppings. These are particles that have physically bonded to the clear coat and cannot be rinsed or shampoo'd off.

Why is this clay specifically for dark and metallic paint?

Soft99 developed this formulation to be particularly gentle on dark clear coats, where any micro-marring from claying shows up most easily, and to enhance metallic flake clarity rather than dulling it. If you run dark blue, black, graphite, silver or any metallic, this is the right grade to reach for.

Do I need a clay lubricant, and what can I use?

Yes - never clay a dry surface. A purpose-made clay lubricant or a diluted quick detailer works well. Apply generously to the panel and to the clay bar, then glide the bar across the surface using light, overlapping strokes. The bar should move freely; if it drags, add more lubricant.

How do I know when the paint is clean?

Run your fingertips over the clayed panel (inside a thin plastic bag makes this even more sensitive). A clean surface feels slick and glassy. If it still feels rough or gritty, fold the clay to a clean face and clay the panel again with fresh lubricant.

How do I get the most out of the 150g bar?

Fold the clay after each panel to expose a fresh, uncontaminated face. This both cleans the bar and prolongs its life considerably. A 150g bar is generous enough for multiple full decon sessions on a standard passenger car when used this way.

What should I do after claying?

The surface is now clean but stripped of any protection. Move straight into paint correction if needed, then apply your chosen wax, sealant or ceramic coating. Because the surface is free of bonded contamination, your protection product will bond more evenly and last longer.

Can I clay other surfaces like glass or wheels?

The Soft99 Surface Smoother Dark & Metallic is formulated and recommended for automotive paintwork. While detailing clay is sometimes used on glass, Soft99 positions this bar for paint surfaces - particularly dark and metallic finishes. Use a product specifically rated for glass or bare metal on those areas to avoid any risk.

What happens if I drop the clay bar on the floor?

Discard that portion of the clay immediately. Clay is designed to pick up and trap contaminants, so any bar that has contacted the ground will have picked up grit that can scratch your paint badly. Fold the affected section inward and cut it off, or replace the bar entirely if contamination is extensive.
