Product Description

The Soft99 Smooth Egg Clay Bar is a professional-grade decontamination clay that pulls bonded fallout, rail dust, tar spots, and industrial deposits off painted surfaces, leaving the paint smooth and properly prepped for correction, coating, or protection.

Ideal for:

- Pre-polish decontamination before paint correction

- Surface prep before applying a ceramic coating or PPF

- Removing stubborn fallout and rail dust that a wash alone won't shift

- Cleaning glass, chrome, and other hard exterior surfaces

Features

- Egg-shaped form sits comfortably in the palm, giving you consistent, controlled pressure across panels

- Fine-grade clay compound pulls contamination without leaving heavy marring on well-maintained paint

- Effective on clear coat, glass, and polished metal surfaces

- Reusable - fold and re-knead the clay to expose a clean face between panels

- Backed by Soft99's decades of Japanese detailing chemistry expertise

Work one panel at a time with a clay lubricant, use light overlapping strokes, and follow up with an IPA wipe-down before any coating or wax application. The finish left behind is noticeably slicker and ready to bond with whatever protection you apply next.

Questions

Frequently asked

What surfaces can I use the Smooth Egg Clay Bar on?

It is safe on clear-coated paintwork, glass, polished metal, and chrome. Avoid porous or matte-finish surfaces, and do not use it on soft rubber trims or plastics that could be scratched by the clay compound.

Do I need a lubricant when using the clay bar?

Yes, always. A dedicated clay lubricant or a slick quick-detailer keeps the clay gliding across the surface without dragging. Never clay a dry panel - you will induce scratching and the clay will tear.

How do I know when the paint needs claying?

Run a clean finger across a freshly washed and dried panel. If it feels rough or gritty, there is bonded contamination that a wash has not removed. You can also use the plastic bag test - stretch a thin bag over your hand and feel the surface through it to amplify the texture.

How do I use and maintain the clay bar during a session?

Work one panel at a time. Spray lubricant generously, then glide the clay bar back and forth with light, overlapping strokes. After each panel, fold and knead the clay to expose a fresh, uncontaminated face. Never let the clay bar fall on the floor - contamination embeds into it instantly and it must be discarded if dropped.

How often should I clay my car?

This depends on how much contamination your car picks up. Most daily drivers benefit from a clay decon once or twice a year. If you are in an area with heavy industrial fallout or near rail corridors, you may need to decon more frequently. Before any paint correction or new ceramic coating, claying is always recommended regardless of timing.

What should I do after claying before applying a coating or wax?

After claying, wipe down the panel with an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) solution at around 10-20% to remove any clay lubricant residue and surface oils. This ensures your coating, sealant, or wax bonds directly and cleanly to the paint. Do not skip this step if you are applying a ceramic coating.

Can I use the Smooth Egg Clay Bar on a car that already has a ceramic coating?

Yes, but with care. A ceramic-coated surface can still accumulate bonded contamination over time. Use plenty of lubricant, keep pressure very light, and follow up with a coat-safe topper or maintenance spray. Frequent claying on a ceramic coating will reduce its longevity, so only clay when the surface contamination is confirmed.

How do I store the clay bar after use?

Rinse the clay bar with clean water after each session, fold it to enclose any contamination inside the body of the clay, and store it in the container it came in with a small amount of clay lubricant or distilled water to keep it moist and pliable. Keep it away from direct heat and direct sunlight, which will dry the clay out and cause it to crumble.

Paint felt like sandpaper after highway driving for a few weeks. One session with this and a good lubricant and the surface was glassy. Clayed before laying down a ceramic and the coating bonded perfectly.
