Where does this compound fit in the polishing process?
Soft99 Polishing Compound is Stage 2 of Soft99's three-step system. You use it after the cutting compound has removed the bulk of the defects, and before the finishing polish brings the paint to its final gloss. It refines any haze, micro-marring or polishing marks the first stage leaves behind.
Which machines can I use this compound with?
It is compatible with both rotary and dual-action (DA) polishing machines. On a rotary you get more aggressive cut, so choose your pad carefully. On a DA it is easier to control and well suited to refining work on panels that are already partially corrected.
Which pad type should I pair with this compound?
For Stage 2 refining work, a medium polishing or light cutting pad usually gives the best balance of cut and clarity. If you are only removing compound haze from an already-corrected panel, a finishing pad is often enough. Avoid a heavy cutting pad at this stage as it can reintroduce defects you have already removed.
Is it safe on all paint types, including soft and dark paint?
Yes. As a medium-abrasive compound it is suitable for use on most factory and respray paint finishes, including softer lacquers. Take extra care on very soft or thin paint and test a small area first. It is particularly well suited to dark paint where clarity and freedom from holograms is critical.
How do I know when the compound has broken down properly?
The compound will turn clear or nearly transparent as it breaks down under the machine. Work until that point before wiping off. If you wipe too early the abrasives are still active and the residue can smear. A medium-speed pass of three to four machine cycles on a standard panel is usually enough.
Can I use this compound by hand?
The formula is designed for machine use to get consistent results. Hand application is possible for very small touch-up areas, but you will not generate enough heat or pressure to break the compound down fully and the finish will be uneven. For any panel larger than a palm, use a machine.
What product should I use after this compound?
Follow with Stage 3, Soft99's finishing polish, to bring the paintwork up to its final mirror gloss. Once corrected and polished, the surface is ready for a wax, paint sealant or ceramic coating of your choice.
How much product do I need per panel?
Because this is a Stage 2 refining step rather than heavy cutting, you need only a small amount per panel. A few drops the size of a five-cent coin on your pad is a good starting point for a standard bonnet or door. The water-based formula spreads easily, so avoid over-loading the pad, which increases dusting and reduces control.
