Frequently asked
What surfaces can I use this kit on?
The Piano Black Restoration Kit is formulated for high-gloss black plastic trim, both exterior and interior. Think piano black pillars, grille surrounds, mirror caps, door inserts and centre console panels. Do not use it on matte or satin finishes, painted bodywork, or rubber seals.
Do I need a machine polisher or is this a hand application?
This is a hand-application kit. The cleaner step is worked in by hand with a soft microfibre applicator, and the coating step is also applied by hand. The areas it targets are typically too small and intricate for a machine polisher, and the formula is calibrated for manual use.
How bad a condition can the trim be in before this kit stops working?
The kit handles light to moderate swirl marks, fine scratches and surface contamination well. Deep gouges or heavy scratches that catch a fingernail are beyond what a trim-restoration product like this can address - those need wet sanding or panel replacement. For anything that looks like a haze of fine swirls, this will make a significant difference.
What is the flash time and how do I know when to buff?
Apply the cleaner step to a small section and allow it to haze to a light, almost dry film before buffing with a clean microfibre. In typical conditions this takes one to two minutes. Do not let it dry fully or work in direct sun on hot trim, as it can become harder to remove cleanly.
How long does the protective coating last?
Durability on gloss plastic trim depends on how often the surface is touched and how it is maintained. Realistically, the coating provides protection over several weeks of normal use. On exterior trim exposed to washing and weather, top up when water no longer beads or the trim starts picking up fingerprints easily again.
Can I use this as part of a decon and full detail workflow?
Yes. Complete your decon stage - wash, iron fallout remover, clay if needed - before using this kit. You want a clean, contamination-free surface so the cleaner step works on the trim itself, not surface dirt. Apply the kit after paint correction and before any final sealant or wax stage on the bodywork.
Can I layer the coating step with a ceramic coating or sealant?
The coating in this kit is designed as a standalone protectant for gloss plastic trim. If you intend to apply a ceramic coating over the trim, complete the cleaner step from this kit, wipe the surface with an IPA solution to ensure it is residue-free, and then apply your ceramic. Do not layer the kit's coating under a ceramic without degreasing in between.
What finish does the kit leave and will it look different to the surrounding paintwork?
The kit restores and enhances the original high-gloss appearance of piano black plastic, leaving a deep, wet-look finish. On OEM piano black trim this will blend naturally with the surrounding bodywork. The coating also adds a light slickness to the surface. The result is a restored factory appearance, not an artificial overly-shiny film.
