What machine polisher should I use with this compound?
Soft99 Cutting Compound is designed for both rotary and dual-action (DA) polishers. For the most aggressive cut on heavily oxidised or deeply scratched paint, pair it with a rotary and a cutting pad. A DA polisher with a medium-cut foam or microfibre pad also works well and gives you more control on thinner paint.
Can I use this compound by hand?
This product is formulated for machine use. Hand application will not generate enough heat and friction to activate the abrasives fully, so the cutting performance will be significantly reduced. For best results, always use a rotary or DA polisher.
What defects does this compound remove?
Soft99 Cutting Compound is rated for severe defects: deep swirl marks, heavy scratches, oxidation, sanding marks (up to around P1500 or finer, depending on paint hardness), and water-spot etching. For lighter defects like fine swirls or buffer trails, step straight to Stage 2 - Soft99 Polishing Compound.
Will it leave haze or micro-marring after use?
Yes. As a high-abrasive Stage 1 compound, it will leave some haze and micro-marring - that is expected and by design. The surface is intended to be refined with Soft99 Polishing Compound (Stage 2) and then finished with Soft99 Finishing Compound (Stage 3) to achieve a clean, high-gloss result.
Is it safe on all paint types and colours?
Soft99 Cutting Compound is suitable for use on clear-coated factory paintwork across all colours. Exercise more caution on thin or single-stage paint - check paint depth with a gauge before correction and take lighter passes. It is not formulated for use on raw metal, bare plastic, glass or rubber trim.
How long should I work the product before wiping off?
Work a small section (roughly 40cm x 40cm) at a time. Keep the polisher moving and work the compound until it starts to break down and becomes more transparent on the panel. Do not let it dry out completely before removing. Wipe residue with a clean microfibre cloth and inspect before moving to the next panel section.
Can I apply a ceramic coating or sealant directly after this compound?
No. Soft99 Cutting Compound is Stage 1 of a three-step system. You need to follow with the Polishing Compound (Stage 2) and Finishing Compound (Stage 3) to fully refine the surface before applying any coating, wax or sealant. Applying protection over a surface that still has cutting compound haze will trap the marring under the coating.
How much product do I need per panel?
For machine application, a few pea-sized drops spread evenly across the pad is sufficient per section. Product quantity will vary depending on the size of the panel, the severity of the defects and how many passes are required. The 300ml bottle is enough for a full correction on a standard-sized vehicle, with product to spare.
