Frequently asked
What surfaces can Chassis Black be applied to?
Chassis Black is formulated for metal surfaces including chassis rails, suspension arms, subframes, wheel arches and underbody panels. It bonds well to bare metal, previously coated underbody surfaces and primed metal. It is not intended for painted exterior body panels or brake rotors and drums.
Does the surface need any preparation before spraying?
Yes. The surface must be clean, dry and free of grease, oil and loose rust. Wipe down with a degreaser or panel wipe beforehand. Any flaking old coating should be wire-brushed or sanded back. On bare metal, a self-etching primer will improve adhesion and corrosion resistance before applying Chassis Black.
How many coats are recommended?
Two to three thin coats give the best result. Allow each coat to flash off before applying the next. Applying one heavy coat tends to cause runs and uneven texture, so build up the coverage gradually.
What is the flash time between coats?
Allow approximately 10 to 15 minutes between coats under normal conditions. Full cure takes longer, so avoid exposing freshly coated surfaces to water, mud or road debris for at least 24 hours after the final coat.
What finish does Chassis Black leave?
It dries to a satin black finish that closely matches the factory underbody coating found on most vehicles. It is not a gloss paint and is not intended for visible exterior panels where a high-gloss finish is needed.
Can Chassis Black be used on wheel arches that are regularly exposed to mud and water?
Yes. The coating is designed to handle the conditions typical of underbody and wheel arch areas, including moisture, mud and stone chip impact. For heavily exposed arches, clean back to sound metal and apply a couple of coats for reliable coverage.
Can it be sprayed over existing underbody coating or Waxoyl-type products?
It can be applied over sound, clean existing underbody coatings. Waxoyl-type products that remain waxy or oily should be removed first, as they will prevent the paint from bonding correctly. If the old coating is flaking or peeling, remove it before spraying.
How does Chassis Black protect against rust?
The coating forms a barrier that blocks moisture from reaching the metal surface, which is the primary cause of surface rust. It is a topcoat barrier rather than a chemical rust converter, so it performs best on clean or primed metal. For surfaces that already have light rust, treat the rust first before applying Chassis Black.
