Which clay bar should I use first?
Start with the Work Stuff SPOT (medium grade) for general bonded contamination - industrial fallout, light tar and sap. Switch to the Work Stuff DOT (hard grade) only where the surface is heavily contaminated with stubborn overspray or severe fallout. Using the softer grade first reduces the risk of marring.
Do I need to use DL Lube, or can I use a different lubricant?
DL Lube is formulated specifically to work with clay bars and provides the level of lubrication needed to prevent the clay from dragging and causing scratches. Using a product that doesn't provide sufficient lubrication risks marring the paint. Stick with DL Lube for predictable, safe results.
What contaminants does this kit remove?
The clay bars physically lift and trap contaminants that regular washing leaves behind: bonded industrial fallout, ferrous particles, tar, overspray, tree sap and rail dust. If your panel still feels rough after a proper wash, clay is the right next step.
What surfaces can I clay with this kit?
The kit is suitable for painted surfaces, glass and other smooth exterior surfaces when used correctly with DL Lube. Avoid using clay bars on bare matte or satin paint wraps, rough textured plastics, or any surface where abrasion would cause damage.
How do I know when the surface is fully decontaminated?
Run a clean, dry fingertip across the panel after claying a section. A correctly decontaminated surface feels genuinely smooth, like glass. If you can still feel texture or grittiness, apply more lube and work that area again before moving on.
Do I need to do a chemical decon (iron remover) before claying?
Yes, and it is strongly recommended. Run an iron fallout remover first to dissolve bonded ferrous particles, then rinse thoroughly before claying. This reduces the load on the clay bar, prolongs its life and lowers the chance of dragging trapped particles across the paint.
What do I do after claying?
After claying, wipe the surface with a clean microfibre cloth to remove any lube residue. The surface is now ready for correction, polishing, or application of a wax, sealant or ceramic coating. For best bonding on a ceramic coating, follow with an IPA panel wipe before applying.
How do I store the clay bars between uses?
Keep each clay bar in an airtight container or resealable bag to prevent it from drying out. If a clay bar is dropped on the ground, do not use it again on paint - the bar will have picked up grit that can cause serious scratching. Rather knead the bar and inspect it carefully before any further use.
