What makes forced rotation different from a standard dual-action polisher?
On a standard free-spin DA, the backing plate can slow or stop under heavy pressure - the orbit is driven only by an eccentric bearing. The XCE 2.8's gearbox positively drives the backing plate in rotation while simultaneously producing the 8mm orbital movement. That means consistent abrasive contact even under load, which translates to more cut per pass than a free-spin DA of similar size.
What surfaces is this polisher suitable for?
It is designed primarily for automotive clear coat and paint, but Flex also rates it for maritime and aviation applications. It works on any surface that can accept a 150mm backing plate - panels, bonnets, roofs, and flat curves on boats or aircraft skins. It is not intended for soft interior surfaces or delicate trims where a smaller, lighter tool would be more appropriate.
What backing plate and pad size does it take?
The XCE 2.8 14-EC C accepts a maximum backing plate and polishing disc size of 150mm (6 inch). Flex's own system recommendation for one-step polishing pairs it with their 150mm violet sponge pad. Always match the pad diameter to the backing plate size - do not exceed 150mm.
What speed range should I use for correction versus finishing?
For cutting medium scratches and removing holograms, work in the mid-to-upper speed range. The no-load speed runs from 225 to 700 rpm (2700 to 8700 orbit rate), and the stepless dial lets you find the right window for your compound and pad combination. For finishing and refining before LSP application, drop to the lower end of the range and use a softer pad. Start at a lower speed, prime the pad, and build up.
Can I use this machine with pads and compounds from other brands?
Yes. Any 150mm backing plate with the correct thread - typically M14 - and any compatible 150mm foam or microfibre pad will work. Flex recommends their violet sponge and violet polish for one-step results, but the machine is not locked to Flex consumables. Use the compound and pad combination that suits the defect level of the paint you are correcting.
Is the XCE 2.8 suitable for a detailer moving up from a free-spin DA?
It is a natural step up. The forced rotation gives noticeably more aggression than a free-spin DA, particularly on moderate to heavy swirling or light marring, but the simultaneous orbital movement keeps it safer than a straight rotary. The ergonomic grip, low weight of 2.2kg and trigger lock make it manageable for extended correction sessions without the learning curve of a full rotary.
How does the temperature monitoring and overload protection work?
The microprocessor electronics continuously monitor the motor temperature and load. If the machine is pushed beyond its thermal limits - typically through sustained high-load passes or a blocked pad - it will reduce power or cut out to protect the motor.
